Recovery Strop

A recovery strop from Toco Lifting is a made to order synthetic rope sling for vehicle and plant recovery, towing and restraint, built on a high modulus polyethylene core with an abrasion resistant cover and protected soft eyes. Standard strops run from 30 tonne to 350 tonne minimum break load, with larger sizes to 500 tonne on request, manufactured to ISO 10325 and ISO 2307 and supplied with a traceable ID tag and certificate. The figures on this page are minimum break loads, not working load limits; the rated load for a given application is confirmed on enquiry. What a recovery strop is

A recovery strop is a synthetic rope sling used to recover a stuck or disabled vehicle or machine, to tow, and to restrain a load. Its low elongation transfers the pull directly, and its high strength to weight ratio keeps a high break load in a strop that a crew can handle. Toco sources recovery strops for mining, vehicle recovery, towing and restraint buyers across South Africa and the SADC region.

Construction

The load is carried by a high modulus polyethylene core. An abrasion resistant braided cover protects the core along the body of the strop, and each soft eye is separately covered where it bears on a shackle, hook or recovery point. The combination gives a high strength to weight ratio, low elongation and minimal recoil at break. Every strop carries a traceable ID tag that records its certified rating.

Made to order

Recovery strops are made to order. Length, eye size, colour and optional end hardware are specified per order, so the strop matches the recovery points, the shackles and the pull distance on site.

Applications

Mining and plant recovery, vehicle recovery, towing, restraint and lifting applications where a synthetic sling is specified. For rated lifting duties, state the load and the hitch on enquiry so the correct rating is confirmed; Toco also supplies steel wire rope, wire rope slings, duplex flat webbing slings and endless round slings where those suit the lift better.

Standards and certification

Strops are manufactured to ISO 10325 and ISO 2307. Each strop is supplied with its certificate and carries a traceable ID tag. Toco Lifting is a registered Lifting Machinery Entity (LME 008); a synthetic recovery strop is not one of the equipment classes covered by LME 008 testing, so that registration stands here as a company credential only.

Splicing

Splicing reduces the break load by approximately 10 to 15 percent. Order the length and eye configuration that is needed rather than altering a strop in service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between minimum break load and working load limit on a recovery strop?

Minimum break load is the force at which the strop is certified not to fail; it is the figure in the table on this page. Working load limit is the load the strop may be used at in service and is always a fraction of the break load. Toco does not publish a working load limit for recovery strops because the correct rating depends on the application and the recovery method. State the vehicle or plant mass and the recovery situation on enquiry and the rated load is confirmed with the quote.

What is a recovery strop made of?
