Hand Chain Wheels are used on Roller Doors and for the mechanical opening of big valves on petroleum and mining plants and mills.
Snatch Blocks, Reeving Blocks & Pulleys
Toco Lifting (Pty) Ltd, South Africa’s premier lifting, lashing and rigging equipment supplier, supplies sheave wheels in fully machined steel and cast iron, with phosphor bronze bushes or double-row full-complement cylindrical roller bearings, in diameters from 150 mm to 530 mm. Sheave wheels are the grooved rolling element inside snatch blocks, sheave blocks and pulley assemblies. Cast and OEM sheaves are made up to order. A Conformance Certificate is issued when the sheave is part of a complete assembly.
Fully machined steel or cast iron with phosphor bronze bushes, with diameters ranging from 150mm to 530mm.
Delivery and lead time: [DELIVERY & LEAD TIME: CONFIRM WITH TOCO]
Toco Lifting has supplied sheave wheels and rigging components to industrial workshops, plant operators, mining, crane fleets and marine yards across South Africa since 2002, as the country’s premier lifting, lashing and rigging partner. Sheaves are supplied as replacement parts for existing blocks, as build components for custom block assemblies, or as OEM-spec replacements for proprietary cranes and reeving systems. | Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter range | 150 mm to 530 mm | Standard range, custom diameters quoted |
| Material | Fully machined steel or cast iron | Material specified by client at quote, application driven |
| Bush / bearing | Phosphor bronze bush, or double-row full-complement cylindrical roller (sealed) | Bush accepts grease, sealed roller bearing for higher loads and continuous duty |
| Groove profile | Profiled to rope diameter | Sized to match the rope it carries, confirmed at order against the OEM datasheet |
| Stocking | Made up on request | Cast and OEM-replacement sheaves are not stocked. Ordered on customer request to complete a configuration or replace a worn component |
Sheave-to-rope sizing follows the D/d ratio: sheave diameter (D) divided by rope diameter (d). Two rules apply:
Worked example: a 12 mm steel wire rope wants a sheave of at least 192 mm (D/d 16:1) for occasional duty, or 216 mm to 288 mm (D/d 18:1 to 24:1) for sustained service.
| Application | Approved? |
|---|---|
| Replacement sheave for snatch, sheave or reeving blocks (correctly matched diameter, groove and bush) | YES |
| OEM components in Toco-built or customer-built block assemblies | YES |
| Workshop and crane rope redirection in custom rigging | YES |
| Mining, crane fleet and dockyard maintenance, replacement and rebuild parts | YES |
| Use without correctly sizing rope to groove, causes rope wear and damage | NO |
| Use beyond rated diameter for rope size (D/d below 16:1) for sustained service | NO |
| Use as a stand-alone anchor point, sheaves are rolling elements not lifting points | NO |

A sheave wheel is the grooved rolling element inside a snatch block, sheave block, reeving block or pulley assembly. The groove holds the rope or cable as it runs over the wheel, allowing the rope direction to change without dragging or kinking. Sheaves rotate on a central bush or bearing, phosphor bronze bushes for general rigging or sealed roller bearings for sustained duty.
In casual use the terms overlap. Strictly, the sheave is just the wheel, the rotating component with the rope groove. A pulley or block is the assembly, sheave plus side plates, axle pin, and attachment hook or eye. Toco supplies both, complete blocks (snatch blocks, sheave blocks, manilla rope blocks) and individual sheaves as replacement components.
The bush is the cylindrical bearing surface at the centre of the sheave. Toco specifies phosphor bronze bushes (a copper-tin alloy that runs smoothly against a steel axle, accepts grease, and resists wear under sustained side load) or double-row full-complement cylindrical roller bearings (sealed, higher load capacity, continuous-duty applications). Bronze bushes are favoured for industrial duty in dust and field conditions.
Sheave-to-rope sizing follows two rules. First, the groove must match the rope diameter, a groove too small pinches the rope, a groove too large lets it crush. Second, the sheave diameter (D) should be at least 16 times the rope diameter (d) for steel wire rope under occasional load, and 18 to 24 times for sustained service. A 12 mm steel wire rope wants a sheave of at least 192 mm for occasional duty, or 216 mm and up for sustained service.
Toco supplies both. Material is application-driven and specified by the client at quote. Steel sheaves are the standard for industrial duty, heavier wear life and higher load tolerance. Cast iron sheaves are used as a cost-effective option for general rigging, light-duty blocks and replacement parts in older equipment. Cast and OEM sheaves are made up on request rather than stocked.
When the sheave is supplied as part of a complete configured assembly (such as a complete snatch block or reeving block from the OEM), Toco issues a Conformance Certificate for the unit. When the sheave is supplied as an individual component or replacement part, no certificate is issued, components alone are not inspected and certified. Testing and certification apply only to the complete configuration.
In most cases, yes. Sheaves are dimensional parts, and a correctly sized replacement (matching diameter, bush bore, groove size and axle compatibility) will drop into an existing block frame. Bring or send a photo of the existing sheave, the block frame, and the rope size, Toco can match it from a supply partner OEM or quote a machined replacement.
Phosphor bronze bushes tolerate moisture and intermittent salt exposure better than plain steel-on-steel. Sealed roller bearings are also suitable for outdoor and damp-environment service. For permanent saltwater service, ask about marine-grade bushes and corrosion-protected sheave faces, Toco can quote a suitably finished sheave for marine duty.

Manilla Rope Blocks are pulley blocks designed for fibre rope (manila, polyester, polypropylene) — used for line redirection and block-and-tackle lifting in industrial, construction, and marine rigging. Toco Lifting supplies single, double, and treble sheave configurations for 10–24 mm rope, with safe working loads from 65 kg to 2,000 kg, manufactured to British Standard or London Pattern.
Toco Lifting (Pty) Ltd, South Africa’s premier lifting, lashing and rigging equipment supplier, stocks single-sheave snatch blocks for steel wire rope from 0.5 ton to 40 ton. Snatch blocks have one sheave and are used to redirect a winch line or wire rope under load. Multi-sheave equivalents are sheave blocks or rope blocks. LME 008 registered, Conformance Certificate with every unit.
