A drum grab is a lifting attachment that holds a drum securely so it can be lifted and moved by a crane or hoist. It removes the need to lift or tilt a loaded drum by hand, which keeps the load under control and the operator clear of it. Drum grabs are used to move drums of oil, chemicals, paint, lubricant and other bulk liquids or solids around plants, workshops, stores and loading areas.

A vertical drum grab grips the drum and lifts it in its upright position. As the lifting hook takes the weight, the grab’s gripping action tightens on the drum, so the heavier the drum the firmer the hold. When the drum is set down and the lifting force is released, the grab releases the drum.
Because the grip depends on the lift, a drum grab should only be loaded within its rated capacity and used on drums it is designed to suit. Always position the drum so it is stable before lifting, and keep personnel clear of a suspended drum.

A drum grab is lifting tackle rather than a lifting machine, so it cannot suspend or halt motion automatically once input energy stops. Where a certificate is required, a drum grab is supplied with a Conformance Inspection Certificate, and an OEM Certificate can be provided on request for imported stock where a manufacturing trace is needed.
Like all lifting tackle, a drum grab in service should be inspected at regular intervals and kept in good condition. Toco supplies the correct certification with the product on enquiry, and can inspect lifting tackle as part of its testing and certification service.
Safe drum handling comes down to a few basics. Use a drum grab only within its rated 0.5 ton capacity. Check the grab before each use for damage, wear or distortion, and take a damaged grab out of service. Make sure the grab is properly engaged on the drum before taking the load, lift smoothly without snatching, and keep people clear of the drum while it is suspended. Set the drum down on a stable surface before releasing the grab.
Drum grabs are used wherever loaded drums need to be moved safely and under control. Typical settings include refineries, oil and gas operations and daily preventative maintenance, among many other heavy industrial applications.
